Charmaine Barnhill

SBS Staff Spotlight: Charmaine Barnhill

Welcome to another SBS staff spotlight. We recently interviewed the newest addition to the SBS Accounting & Advisors‘ family, Charmaine Barnhill. Get to know Charmaine in this profile of her role at SBS.

Jonathan Bill: How long have you been at SBS?

Charmaine Barnhill: Four months.

JB: What do you do for SBS?

CB: Account manager.

JB: What is the most satisfying part of your job, and what are you most looking forward to?

CB: The most satisfying part of my role here at SBS is being able to help our clients maximize their potential in their businesses. I look forward to each and every day, being able to provide our clients with excellent service.

JB: What do you think is the most productive app to use with QuickBooks Online (QBO)?

CB: There are many QBO apps that I like and work with on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. However, I believe one of the most productive apps is the Gusto payroll application.

JB: What is it like working remotely, and what tools do you use to do so?

CB: Working remotely is a blessing. I have a total office setup, as if I was going into a brick and mortar. I have a notebook that I keep handy – right beside my computer – to write my daily notes in. I have a three-monitor setup, and I use all three all the time. I love working remotely, and I am truly blessed to be a part of the SBS Family.

JB: Can you describe a complicated client issue and how you solved it?

CB: One of my clients had six intercompany accounts that had a lot of moving parts, and because I have experience in reconciling intercompany accounts, I was able to correct their intercompany accounts in less time than we budgeted for.

JB: What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

CB: I enjoy family time with my husband, Marc Sr., and my two children, Marc Jr. and Camille. I love traveling, movie night, game night, date night, spending time with my family and friends, and worshipping and fellowshipping with my church family.

JB: Thanks Charmaine!

Looking to Grow? Start by Defining and Documenting Your Core Values

Far too often, businesses put “mission” and “core values” on their website merely as filler or as a marketing tactic to draw customers in.

Core values that are developed through honesty, hard work and dedication – and carried out in the right way – can propel you and your business to success. You’ll gain an edge in your industry, leading through purposeful action and embodiment.

But, before you reach that stage, you must first define and document your own core values. To help you in this endeavor, we recently came up with our core values at SBS Accounting & Advisors. Here is a little more about those, as well as other important information surrounding core values.

What are Core Values? Why are They Important?

Core values are about who you are and what you stand for. They are not your goals or aspirations; instead, they are the distinguishing characteristics and qualities of you and your team.

They represent team culture and behavior, and even shape the decisions and strategies you make as a company. They also serve to hold you accountable for your actions, as well as dictate how you are going to lead your team and its business into a place of success and growth.

You can develop core values two ways. First, you can come up with your own core values, and expect your team to embody and implement them, or second, work with your team to come up with core values that you can all live by together.

At our firm, I chose the latter. Over our 13-year journey, I’ve come to realize that I’m only as strong as my team, and it’s a must to all carry out the same message, and level of passion and service, if we are ever going to meet customer’s expectations and succeed.

So, what did this mean for us? It meant dedicating our time – meeting four or five times for 30-45 minutes each time – to decide on the core values as a team. We are proud of these values because we believe they dictate who we are and what we represent and stand for.

SBS Core Values

Here are our core values at SBS Accounting & Advisors:

  • Primary purpose. We endeavor to glorify God in all that we do, with the conviction that one day we will stand before Him and give an account.
  • Love for others. We treat our neighbor with love and respect by showing genuine concern through word and deed.
  • Quality. We strive to do everything with excellence and attention to detail, in order that we might provide the best service possible to our clients.
  • Integrity. We foster and maintain a reputation of trust by being honest and transparent in all that we say and do, including adherence to the laws of the land and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Efficiency. We operate in a streamlined and organized fashion by implementing and utilizing cutting-edge systems and technology, resulting in savings of time and energy for our clients and company.
  • Workplace culture. We provide a superior work environment for our employees that encourages personal development and promotes work/life harmony.
  • Client satisfaction. We provide an excellent client experience by putting our clients first, delivering on our commitments, and rendering services that free and empower our clients to grow their organizations.

Ready to Decide on Your Core Values, or Have any Questions? We’re Here to Help!

As you can see, we feel core values are extremely important to any business, but only if done the right way. For instance, if you’re using them just to attract customers, they’re not just disingenuous, but also a hazard to success. In other words, it may bring in a customer, but once they see there’s little meaning behind the words, that customer is unlikely to do business with you in the future. Beyond that, it can tarnish your reputation.

The main thing is that if core values don’t become something that guides you as a company, they’re meaningless. You must live by these core values, consistently practice and preach them, and celebrate when your team exemplifies them. Your team must know how important they are to you if you’re going to expect them to value and carry them out themselves.

So, if you’re ready to define your business’ core values, or simply have any questions, reach out to us today. You’ll be on your way to big things in the future!

New QuickBooks Online Features Drive Success

As small business owners, lack of time, tools and resources can leave us feeling stuck and driving in reverse – without enough traction to grow our businesses.

That’s why I am so passionate about QuickBooks Online (QBO). As a small business owner, you need powerful solutions to your everyday needs – delivered in a way that’s easy and convenient, allowing you time to focus on taking your business to the next level.

What’s even more exciting is that Intuit is always listening to your challenges and recommendations, constantly coming up with new features that transcend your experience and drive success.

The latest batch of features does just that. Here’s more about those new enhancements, and, of course, SBS Accountants & Advisors can help you implement them into your workflow.

Track Business Miles Accurately Without Pencil & Paper

The days of rummaging through your glove compartment for that scribbled notepad are long gone – that is, if you’re plugged into QBO and the latest technology.

Previously only available in QuickBooks Self-Employed, mileage tracking is now nestled inside QBO and QBO Advanced to deliver accurate mileage recording while on the go – taking a previously time-consuming, mundane task out of your hands. And, there’s a bonus: if you switch from Self-Employed to QBO, your miles will carry over, along with you!

Thanks to powerful built-in automation, a simple swipe allows you to document the exact mileage of any business-related trip, helping both of us come tax time. You can even mark any trip you want as a “favorite,” so that it’s a breeze distinguishing between future business and personal trips.

In addition, you can manually enter mileage (by selecting ‘mileage’ on the navigation bar) by putting in your starting point and destination, miles driven, and labeling the drive business or personal. Here’s an illustration of how to create a rule to automate the process.

You’ll be able to get your estimated tax deduction for this trip right away, which you can also compute for the entire year – all at your fingertips inside the app.

In the near future, you can expect more features for Android and iPhone users, including location-based rules to be able to quickly select those same continuous business trips that you navigate throughout the year.

Invoices in Other Languages

Now, inside QBO, you can send out invoices to clients in other languages. So, if you have a client that prefers to read their invoice in French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil) or Chinese (Traditional), you can accommodate them.

Simply select the language you want from the Customer information pop-up, and that client will get their invoice in that language every time (as shown below).

Ready to Implement These Features or Have any Questions? We’re Here to Help!

We hope that you are as excited about these new features as we are, and would love to help you implement them into your workflow for next-level results.

So, if you’re ready to tap into these powerful enhancements, or have any questions, contact us today. You’ll be on your way to smoother rides, effortless efficiency and simple convenience.
